A Great Song Remembered

For some reason last night, I remembered a song I heard from my childhood "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts". I have always associated my memory of the song with Jimmy Durante, but it was originally made famous by Danny Kaye in the 50's and later by the good people of Monty Python. Anyway, I came back to the office after my lunch-time haircut. I sang the chorus (in a pretty good Durante impersonation if I say so myself), and did an appropriate little dance to it as well for Mr. Clay. Needless to say, he was as enamoured with the song as I have always been.

I know I have seen Durante perform this song, but just don't know where. I am off to you tube to try and find it. In the mean time here are the lyrics:

Down at an english fair one evening I was there
When I heard a showman shouting underneath the flair
I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts
There they are all standing in a row
Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head
Give them a twist a flick of the wrist
That’s what the showman said
I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts
Every ball you throw will make me rich
There stands my wife, the idol of me life
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball, roll a bowl a ball
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts (they’re lovely)
There they are all standing in a row (one, two, three, four)
Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head (and bigger)
Give them a twist a flick of the wrist
That’s what the showman said
I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts
Every ball you throw will make me rich
There stands my wife, the idol of me life
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch (all together now)
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch (harmony)
Roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch
Roll a bowl a ball, roll a bowl a ball
Singing roll a bowl a ball a penny a pitch

Freaking genius. I love this song from the old fashioned images it brings to mind to the carnival-like music it's sung to. Everything to love about this song.
